Madderra Dentistry is the best. I hadn't been to a dentist in... well... too long. They were very welcoming and not at all judgmental. I had a cleaning and had to return to have very old fillings replaced (the very thought of which was anxiety-producing.) Everything went great. There was very little pain or discomfort, and I felt just fine within a couple of hours. The environment is very contemporary and feels like the polar opposite of my former, more old-fashion dentist. I highly recommend you give this office a try. They have a range of other services I'm now going to investigate.

It would be hard to say enough great things about this office. I don't think that anyone gets excited about going to the dentist, but this office makes sure that everyone feel not only comfortable, but welcome and well cared for. It truly has a "spa feel" which is such a pleasant surprise. From the time you walk into the front door, through the treatment process and beyond, the feeling is one of calm and care. This truly is an office where the staff, dentist and the environment are all, five star!

Well now...five stars?? If I could have selected six, I would have. I have been a patient at this wonderful dental spa for a few years. I could go on and on and on about the beauty and comfort of the office itself; the friendly and gracious professionalism provided by everyone in the office and the spa; the exceptional work done by Dr. Madderra and his staff. I could, but I won't. But, suffice it to say that even without a presence in cable television ads, the word-of-mouth generated by anyone lucky enough to have been seen by Dr. Madderra is spreading. People are taking notice, and wising up to the fact that here, in this quiet little nook of the Upper Market / Castro District in San Francisco, is the most wonderful, accommodating, accepting, patient and truly beneficial dentistry office. After one visit to Dr. Madderra, you won't be going anywhere else for dental needs. I work as a Concierge in San Francisco, and have sent many guests to Dr. Madderra for emergency services; all that I have sent have returned to my Concierge desk pleased beyond belief.
Dr. Madderra...has ALWAYS exhibited nothing but abject politeness and amiability toward everyone in the office - staff members and patients - on a continual basis. It is always a pleasure to watch and listen to Dr. Madderra as he asks for assistance from his staff - he is always so polite and gracious! To repeat an oft-heard phrase: Dr. Madderra gave me back my smile, and I mean that most sincerely...and somehow Charlisa is ALWAYS willing to assist with billing, which I am quite sure must be a challenge for her at time. Thanks to all at this wonderful dental spa!

I'm a big fan of Dr. Madderra. Like most people I really don't like going to the dentist, but have found him to really be caring and sensitive to making me as comfortable as possible. I have had a lot of major restorative and cosmetic work done--had all my old silver mercury fillings replaced with composites and also had front porcelain crowns completed and I'm in the process of having porcelain veneers to finish my top front teeth. I find him to be the consummate professional. He actually listens to me and hears what my concerns are. When doing the crown work for me last year, the lab did not quite get the color he wanted for me. He had them redo the crowns THREE different times until he was satisfied the color was the right match. I am sure this ended up costing him and the lab more money than they made--but I truly appreciate his perfectionism--as he told me, once I seat these crowns--this is permanent, so I want to get it right. He's a super nice guy and has done an amazing job helping me improve my smile!

Nirvana is the best description for Dr Madderra's dental practice. I'd rather be at his office than going to work. Its unfortunate I never have to wait because he has the most relaxing lobby/reception area with cushy soft seats, new age soothing music, a current Wall Street Journal, fresh tea and water in a real glass (no paper cups here), and friendly staff. Dr Madderra of course has a great smile and laugh and really makes me feel at home. As previously mentioned -- Nirvana.

There is NOTHING I would change about this dental office... seriously! Dr. Madderra and his staff are the nicest, most sincere and caring people whose goal is VERY clear - YOUR GOOD DENTAL HEALTH!
I was living in Oakland when I first started seeing Dr. Madderra. I was searching for a gay-friendly dentist with a comfortable office environment who took my insurance. Once I stepped foot inside I was hooked! Depending on the day you have your appointment you may get a complimentary mini-facial from one of the sweetest gals, Charlisa! She is SUCH a doll! I scheduled an appointment for a mens facial with her, separate from my dental appointments - $75ish and well worth it! She gave me many useful tips which I am still using to this day!
Dr. Madderra even went above-and-beyond by arranging for me to have Invisalign (SOOO well worth it!!) which I am 2 trays from the end now. In February I moved to SoCal and he still remains my dentist, shipping my trays to me in 6 week intervals, checking up with me before each shipment.
He also has an office in Sacramento, but I have never been to it.

Best dentist experience eva. I can't wait for my next visit!
No but seriously, nicest incredibly helpful people, very professional, accommodating, very comfortable setting, and only 2 blocks from my house.
I'm hoping for excruciating toothaches so I have a reason to go back there again asap!
No but seriously, awesome dentist, awesome staff.

No one likes going to the dentist. It's stressful, it's scary, and sometimes it really really hurts!
Well, you're in for a pleasant surprise with Dr. Madderra. From the moment you walk in until you leave, it's a pleasant experience. The staff works with you (and your insurance company) to ensure that there's no stress there -- and everything about your visit is calm and relaxed and professional.
I've had other dentists before that were alright. But I would still dread having my teeth cleaned (or worse!). I've had several procedures so far and all were pleasant experiences.
Have you ever been to a dentist who didn't nag you about flossing? Of course we all know we're supposed to floss -- and sometimes we play this game with our dentist "he knows that I know that he knows that I don't floss!" Doctor Madderra probably wants you to floss (as much as the next dentist) but he respects you enough not to nag you about it!
I've had some bad experiences with other dentists who have tried to get me to do unnecessary procedures or scam my insurance company or who have just been careless or painful or too lofty and unfriendly! Not so with Dr. M. Everything's laid out for you honestly and logically and you'll get exactly what you need for your dental health. Plus, you'll lose your fear of dentists! I promise.

WOW. I still cannot believe the level of service this practice provides. I phoned Dr. Madderra's office to schedule a consultation for invasilgn, and Charlisa (?) answered the phone. She was immediately warm and friendly, and took plenty of time to answer my questions and listen to my concerns. I can be lengthy with my explanations, questions, concerns, and she took it in stride. In fact, she added. She was clearly not in a hurry -- she was going to ensure I felt comfortable coming to their office for a consultation. Once there, I was greeted immediately by one of the staff members -- I can't remember his name -- I was too distracted by the color of his eyes. WOW. (Did I mention I'm a gay man?) Anyway, he was very nice, and asked if I wanted anything to drink. Unusual at the Dentist office, no? So, I hadn't printed out the patient form from the website like i had agreed to do -- but Charlisa didn't even flinch. She handed me the forms with a smile. No problem! Wow. Immediately after finishing my paperwork, they took me back to see Dr. Madderra. What a pleasure. He is friendly, well-groomed, and has a great smile! Turns out he and I had met SEVERAL years ago, and he totally remembered me. I was impressed. I guess I'll wrap this up (finally, right?) -- I am just so grateful to have found such a great dental office in the neighborhood! I clearly can't say enough! Thanks guys! Looking forward to working with you on the Invisalign treatment!

I was indulging in some Thanksgiving leftovers and much to my dismay, a large piece of my tooth broke off and was swallowed! I am like one of the other 100's of SF residents without insurance so I was a bit worried but knew I had to handle the broken tooth ASAP because it was starting to hurt. I live in the Castro and had walked passed the office of Garret Madderra DDS daily and decided to stop in, if nothing more, than for advice on where to go without insurance. As soon as I walked in I felt super welcome and comfortable and decided even without insurance, this is where I am meant to be....long story short, they fit me in the same day, fixed my issue, cleaned my teeth and did not make me feel terrible about avoiding deep cleanings for some time like other dentist have done. Both of my treatments were VERY gentle and quick, but attentive. I would recommend this place to everyone...with OR without insurance. It's so worth it.
Lisa
I love this place... love it, love it, love it... Remember, we're talking about a dentist's office so please understand just how strong a statement "I love this place" is in this context... I love this place.
The zen atmosphere actually really does work, for the most part -- lovely mood music, schwanky herbal tea, light and airy set-up. And then there's Billy. I mean, really, if Billy can't relax you and put you in a positive mood, you're in need of much more than simple dental work. He's a lovely, lovely man and his presence -- his warm, friendly, witty, professional, FABULOUS presence -- in that office is one of the high points.
And then you sit down for Dr. Madderra. He's such a nice guy! His personality certainly lends itself to the zen theme (or vice versa). He does great work, explains things in very practical and human terms and is not one of those "gloom-and-doom, I shall-judge-the-ever-lovi n' -shite-out-of-you- while-tearing-apart-your- mouth" Orin Scrivello types. He's ducky, I tell you, ducky.
And the facials! ...Okay, truth be told I haven't had one yet because my timing is horribly unfortunate, but what other dentist offers a complementary facial after dental work??? I mean, come ON!
I love them and I will be going there as long as they'll have me...

I never thought I'd say it, but I found paradise at the dentist's office! I've always hated going to the dentist, ever since I was a kid and had to look up at the nose hairs of my family dentist. When I moved to San Francisco 12 years ago, I began an endless search for a dentist I could tolerate. I've had 5 different dentists in that time. Some were ok, others were real horror stories. And then I found a review on yelp for Dr. Madderra's office. I figured at least I'd get a facial, so it would be worth checking the place out.
All of the reviews here sum it up. The place is amazing. The staff is friendly, efficient, professional, and made me feel very comfortable. The atmosphere is very relaxing and tranquil. And Dr. Madderra was great. He cleaned my teeth and I felt absolutely no pain - I think it is the first time in my life I didn't mind the cleaning. I was relaxing in the comfortable leather chair waiting for my x-rays to be taken and I actually dozed off because I was so relaxed (and tired).
The best part is that I trust the folks in this office. I had a dentist go beyond my insurance limit for procedures that could have waited until the next year. Another dentist continually pressured me to have fillings replaced, even though she would have gone over my limit (and I told her I didn't want to do that). When I explained all of this to Billy, he relayed it to Dr. Madderra, and I left feeling confident that they would stay within my insurance limit and not pressure me to get things done that could wait until the following year.
Now, on to the spa. I can't believe I can go to a dentist and get a free facial! Charlisa was great. She was so sweet and I felt so comfortable, even though it was only the 2nd time in my life I've ever gotten a facial. She explained things I could do to take care of my skin and recommended some products I could use.
For a person who hates the dentist, I can't believe I'm going to say this but I can't wait until I have to go back!

i've now been to 3 types of drs in sf (regular dr, eye dr and dentist) and loved 2 of the 3 of them. A very good track record! this dentist was wonderful. the assistant was so nice, super friendly and helpful. he spent time researching what my new dental insurance (delta) would pay for (yes delta covers them). the whole place is just around the corner from my house, which is great, and it's soo relaxing. it's just like a spa, and no noisy kids running around like i'm used to. you even get offered tea or lemon water when you go in. there is relaxing music playing instead of scary easy listening. the dentist did his exam AND cleaned my teeth himself. not sure if that is usual in CA but in new england, you see the dentist for a total of about 3 minutes, and everything else gets done by a hygentist. the assistant did the x rays and he did a great job too. i had to come back for fillings and was fit in on a tuesday from a visit the previous friday. i got great white resin fillings, and it didnt even hurt, besides the needle for novacaine. an overall great experience. they are having an open house this friday the 10th of August (2007) so if you're considering them, go stop by.

their slogan is "dental office with a spa feel" and its AWESOME. the receptionist, billy, is a most amiable and lovely person who offered me green tea he personally brought from thailand. amazing. the office has great decor, very soothing. as i'm filling out paperwork, they let me know that i get a complimentary facial massage after my cleaning!! the leather chairs are lovely, there is a waterfall fountain and soft music going, and what was most impressive to me was the amount of time i spent with the dentist. he did my cleaning rather than the usual assistant, and it was a pleasure.
after all this, you are brought into a room and you get your face rubbed. who could ask for anything more from a dentist. this is by far one of most excellent things i have discovered in a long time. and to think my insurance company sent me this way. well thanks delta, thank you so much!

I think you would be hard pressed to find a more responsive and effective dental practice. Dr. Madderra is great at what he does, but it doesn't stop there. The whole office is present and passionate about their work. There is never any pressure to do additional work, just options that are explained clearly. I would describe the style as gentle dentistry, ideal for people who have their own unique fears, or issues with a visit to the dentist. So, if you need a crown, a filling, veneers, whitening, or something else, give these guys (and one gal) a chance. You should be very pleased.
