Fluoride Treatment Services

A reason to smile
Fluoride is the most effective agent in preventing tooth decay and reversing early decay. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is commonly present in foods and water supply. Moreover, it fights bacteria that cause gum disease and encourages the growth of strong teeth. For these reasons and many more, we cannot overstate the importance of fluoride in dental care. Not only does it reduce tooth decay by 20 to 40 percent, but it guards your teeth against cavities. Not to mention, you get to save money on dental care that would otherwise be inevitable. The benefits of fluoride have been well known for more than 50 years. Notably, over 100 local and international professional organizations support it. Of course, health specialists and institutions such as Madderra’s Dental Spa encourage the utilization of fluoride.

Fluoride works in two ways

It can be topical or systemic. Firstly, topical fluorides strengthen teeth that have erupted to the surface. It does this by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth, making it resistant to decay. In general, topical fluorides come from dental products, and you either self-apply or have it applied professionally. Examples of topical fluorides we self-apply include toothpaste, mouth rinses, and gel. Nevertheless, no one is immune to a fluoride deficiency. In that case, your dentist may utilize one of the professional topical fluorides such as fluoride varnishes, high-pressure rinses, and silver diamine fluoride. Dr. Madderra and our dental hygienists recommend that children have professional fluoride applications at least twice a year, during their dental check-ups.

They mostly come from foods and community water supplies. Notably, in community waters with fluoride deficiency, the fluoride levels are adjusted as per the recommendation for optimal dental health. Also, you can find systemic fluorides in supplements in the form of drops or gel. Frequently, we recommend fluoride drops for infants. Children between the ages of 6 and 16 years are at a high risk of having decaying teeth, especially when their drinking water has low fluoride content. For this reason, we opt to prescribe a fluoride supplement. Even so, we advise parents to monitor the amount of fluoride their child ingests to prevent fluorosis. Fluorosis occurs due to too much fluoride ingestion during tooth development.

Apart from children, fluoride treatment service is also important to grown-ups. Indeed, the health of your teeth is at risk when you begin having deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of your teeth. Also, your sensitive root surfaces are in danger if you have poor oral hygiene habits and are prone to frequent intake of diet rich in sugar and carbohydrates. However, the fluoride present in normal water and food is not enough to help prevent tooth decay posed by these risks. For this reason, Dr. Madderra or our dental hygienist recommends home and/or professional fluoride treatment.
